Re: John Lyall Sacking/ Paul Ince Leaving
I read that Lyall had offered him a new contract and when he returned McCari said it was too much money for someone his age so retracted it. Whatever he was naive with the shirt and took to long to half apologise only years later. He might have stayed for a bit if Lyall had but Ferguson was after him well before that apparently. West Ham in the Championship or Man United? Pretty sure he would have gone anyway.

Re: John Lyall Sacking/ Paul Ince Leaving
I was at the Stoke game and Ince simply did not “refuse to play” as some have claimed.

It just didn’t happen and is another of the myths of that era. He threw a short tantrum, no question, like many players who want to win do.

But he didn’t stop playing as the story became. It’s mythical bullshit that took hold among a small group of fans, got repeated by many who weren’t there, and then took root.

Posing in another team’s shirt when you’re still a West Ham player, however: that DID happen and he should have known better - even as a youngster. He was a streetwise kid and should have known. And it was done on Mendy’s advice (holiday story, injury delay blah blah).

Have listened to the Dodge/Mendy interview and it’s a really interesting one. Always thought I disliked Mendy , mainly due to the association with Ince but I quite liked how he came across,

Re: John Lyall Sacking/ Paul Ince Leaving
My MATE was in the same youth team as Ince... also Steve Potts... said a couple of times over chadwell heath the old bill turned up to arrest Ince... him and his little mob had a reputation for breaking and entering around Ilford... a lot of his lot ended up inside or in borstal whilst Lyall made a deal with the Old Bill that the club would look after Ince... so yeah I can imagine that he was upset when Lyall was sacked... but it wasnt just him that stuck by him... the Stoke game sticks more in my throat than the leaked photo...

Re: John Lyall Sacking/ Paul Ince Leaving
I knew about the photo being taken by a trusted photographer who stored it ready for use when the transfer went through but then found out another journo who he trusted took it from storage and used it without anyone's permission but what I didn't know is that his only reason for wanting to leave was cos he was disgusted at Lyall being sacked and I didn't know Lyall was like Cus D'amato to Mike Tyson, to Paul Ince..he raised him like a son apparently and Ince would have stayed had Lyall remained. Interesting story anyway.

Re: John Lyall Sacking/ Paul Ince Leaving
Does he mention Ince standing in the centre circle refusing to play?

Whether the infamous picture was his fault or not Ince acted like a proper cnut and deserved all the stick he got

Re: John Lyall Sacking/ Paul Ince Leaving
If I think the version of events are the same then I believe the club were happy to let us believe Ince forced the transfer without their knowledge….
